FARO Scanner Freestyle3D X with Enhanced Accuracy

FARO Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: FARO), the world’s most trusted source for 3D measurement technology, announces the release of the new FARO Scanner Freestyle3D X Handheld Laser Scanner, a 3D Laser Scanner designed to transform the way the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC), Law Enforcement, and other industries document 3D data through easy to use, intuitive data acquisition. With the release of the Freestyle3D X, FARO´s portfolio now contains two handheld scanners designed to help customers increase productivity, save time and make effective, data-driven decisions.

The new Freestyle3D X incorporates state-of-the-art scanning technology that delivers enhanced scanning accuracy of 1 millimeter at 1-meter range. The Freestyle3D X is available with a U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibration accessory to provide users with verifiable data accuracy – which is critical for forensic scanning and other highly regulated industries. On-site calibration data is exportable to PDF format allowing information to be easily shared with other team members.

The Freestyle3D X also incorporates an automatic flash mode enabling users to scan objects in a variety of lighting conditions. New software tools deliver an intensely detailed visualization of the created 3D point cloud, and an integrated best-point filter enhances the quality of the scan data by reducing noise up to 35%. Finally, post-processing functions have also been improved, offering up to 5x faster data saving speed to further improve productivity on the job site.

The Freestyle3D X can be employed as a standalone device or used in concert with FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D X Series Laser Scanners. Point cloud data from all devices can be integrated seamlessly – even in grey scale.

“The Freestyle3D X sets the industry standard for ease-of-use and verifiable accuracy among professional, portable scanning devices,” stated Joseph Arezone, Senior Vice President and Managing Director - Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific. “The new features such as automatic flash mode, best point filter and new algorithms decisively enhance the overall scanning experience and enable users to carry out more projects with better quality at the same time. Moreover, the new Freestyle3D X will allow the most demanding users to achieve better accuracy in their projects.”

With the introduction of the Freestyle3D X to its portfolio, FARO continues its role as a technology innovator for customers – helping them work faster, more effectively and save money in the process. FARO is dedicated to offering a full range of innovative and user-friendly handheld scanners to allow customers to implement and leverage 3D scanning to their business advantage.

New Maptek laser scanners boost underground survey

Underground mine operators can improve site safety and survey productivity with recent releases from Maptek.

The updated I-Site 8200 laser scanners feature new tools and compatibility with Maptek Sentry surface tracking and Drive continuous survey systems.

The I-Site 8200SR is a fast and accurate solution for cavity surveys. A carbon fibre boom extends up to 10 metres into a tunnel or over a void. The 500-metre range scanner can also be used for surface applications such as stockpile, shed and silo scanning.

The I-Site 8200ER has a longer range at 750 metres and provides the best outcomes for mapping underground drives and tunnels as well as surface stockpiles.

A new backsight workflow allows survey resection by triangulating three coordinated targets to find the current real world position of the scanner.

Maptek Managing Director and chief executive of global operations Peter Johnson said making Sentry compatible with the latest I-Site laser scanners means more mining operations can benefit from the system.

‘Sentry combines laser scan data with sophisticated software to track and analyse surface movement over time. Any movement can potentially lead to failures, so early warning is vital.’

‘Researching ways that Sentry could function in low light led to development of an intensity-based grayscale image,’ Johnson said.

‘This benefits our underground customers as well as improving visibility for open pit applications at night.’

‘A great feature of Sentry is it provides absolute tracking. You can take the scanner away to perform another task and return it to the Sentry setup without having to start measuring from scratch,
’ he said.

The Sentry update includes a rollback feature for easier data analysis, as well as translation and other enhancements.

The I-Site 8200 series laser scanners are also compatible with I-Site Drivefor continuously surveying from a moving vehicle.

Johnson said I-Site scanners helped with site safety through Sentry as well as providing conformance reporting using I-Site Studio, Drive and PerfectDig. Laser scanning provides a flexible solution for general survey and volumetric tasks, and the point cloud data can be used in geological face mapping and geotechnical analysis.

The I-Site 8200SR and I-Site 8200ER are available now.

2G Robotics' ULS-500 Underwater Laser Scanner now interfaced with EIVA NaviSuite

2G Robotics' ULS-500 underwater laser scanner is now interfaced with EIVA's software, NaviSuite. NaviSuite is an advanced multipurpose software suite that facilitates data acquisition and processing for subsea surveying and engineering operations.

The underwater laser scanners developed by 2G Robotics capture high resolution 3D point cloud visualizations. The submillimeter-level resolution generated by these innovative systems provides engineers with the detail and precision needed for detecting and assessing damage, developing design and repair plans, and performing maintenance and installations.

Supporting the latest advanced sensor technology for offshore survey and engineering operations is a top priority for EIVA. With the increasing use of laser scanning for pipeline survey and inspection, EIVA recognized the need to include support for 2G Robotics' ULS-500 system in the latest release of NaviSuite. Extensive sea trials were conducted with 2G Robotics' ULS-500 and EIVA NaviSuite to ensure that customers receive a proven, quality solution tailored to their needs..

The NaviSuite implementation includes NaviPac, NaviScan, NaviEdit, NaviModel, and NaviPilot along with NaviSuite Nardoa, EIVA's dedicated solution for pipeline and cable route inspections. With NaviSuite, customers are offered real-time visualizations of the raw point cloud during data acquisition in NaviScan; correction of laser data in NaviEdit by other sensors that provide position, timing, and movement data; the option of working with the laser data as either point clouds or as digital terrain models (DTMs) in combination with other data types such as video, photo mosaics, DTMs generated from multi-beam echo sounder data, digitized pipes, and CAD structures. Existing NaviSuite features such as cross profiles, eventing, and comparison of multiple surveys are still supported as well.

2G Robotics is excited that customers can now benefit from the data acquisition and processing capabilities offered by NaviSuite. EIVA Software Manager, Ole Kristensen, stated:“The high resolution offered by laser scanners makes this type of sensor equipment a very valuable tool for offshore professionals and we want to ensure that they can make use of this equipment as an integrated part of NaviSuite. With the development of the 2G Robotics driver, integration with NaviSuite throughout the data workflow is now possible. NaviSuite's support of 2G Robotics' ULS-500 will facilitate the integration of lasers with ROVs and with other sensors such as multi-beam echo sounders and cable trackers, just to mention a few.”
