Forestry applications for Teledyne Optech airborne lidar at SilviLaser 2015

Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce that our academic partners will give exciting presentations on the use of Teledyne Optech lidar systems for forestry applications at the SilviLaser 2015conference running from September 28th to 30th in La Grande Motte, France.

Prof. Benoît St-Onge of the Université du Québec à Montréal will discuss his pioneering work identifying trees using relative intensity data from Optech Titan’s 532, 1064 and 1550-nm laser channels. In his presentation Prof. St-Onge will describe how he has differentiated between hardwood/softwood trees with only a 3% error rate and identified trees by genus with only a 15% error rate by combining Titan’s multispectral intensity and 3D data. Prof. St-Onge’s techniques make Optech Titan a valuable tool for quickly assessing large tracts of forest in applications such as carbon/biomass measurement, biodiversity, forest science, and tree farming. Prof. St-Onge will give his presentation on using multispectral lidar for forestry in Parallel Session 2 on Monday, September 28th between 1:45 and 3:30 pm and his general keynote address on Tuesday, September 29th at 9:00 am.

On the conference’s final day, Dr. Enrico Paringit of the University of the Philippines will give his own keynote address on the use of lidar systems for large-scale mapping in the Philippines. As part of the Disaster Risk and Exposure Assessment for Mitigation (DREAM) program, Dr. Paringit has mapped river basins and flood plains around the Philippines to help model flooding from typhoons. Over the last three years he has covered tens of thousands of square kilometers thanks to the efficiency and point density of the high-altitude Optech Pegasus and other Teledyne Optech lidars. Now, Dr. Paringit is turning his attention to improving resource management policies in the Philippines, and will describe how he is using Teledyne Optech systems to survey eco-parks, predict and model wildfires, and make inventories of tree plantations in his address Wednesday, September 30th at 9:50 am.

Dr. Paul LaRocque, Teledyne Optech’s VP Advanced Technology, will also be at SilviLaser 2015. You can contact him at Email Contact. Find out more atwww.teledyneoptech.com.

Analysis of CZMIL and coastal mapping technology at Shallow Survey 2015

Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce that it will attend the Shallow Survey 2015 conference taking place at Plymouth University in England on September 14-18. A current user of the Optech CZMIL Coastal Zone Mapping and Imaging Lidar will make a presentation comparing various lidar bathymeters, and interested attendees can visit Teledyne Optech at booth M14.

With the conference focusing on high-resolution surveys in shallow waters, Teledyne Optech expects CZMIL Nova to gain a great deal of attention for its ability to detect objects as small as 1 m3 in water up to 25 meters deep. CZMIL Nova has also expanded the list of coastlines that can be surveyed with lidar, thanks to advanced electronics and data processing techniques that let it survey regions with waters too turbid for other lidars to penetrate. This bathymetric surveying solution is now available even to smaller agencies, which can borrow the system for short surveys through the CZMIL Project Program and install its newly redesigned hardware into small twin-engine aircraft.

Please attend the presentation “A look into the performance of bathymetric lidar systems” given by Chris Macon of the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX). JALBTCX and Teledyne Optech have worked together for 25 years to advance bathymetric lidar technology, resulting in CZMIL’s advanced capabilities. JALBTCX spent the summer testing several types of bathymetric lidar sensors, and Mr. Macon will discuss their results at 10:15 on Wednesday the 16th.

The Teledyne Optech booth will have examples of bathymetry work from CZMIL in turbid water in Asia and Lake Michigan, where HydroFusion’s Turbid Water Module vastly improved bottom detection even in locations with inflowing rivers. In the clearer conditions around Hawaii, JALBTCX performed a production survey of over 1500 km of coastline with CZMIL, ranging from 300 m inland to 1000 m offshore in waters up to 65 m deep. Visitors can learn more about these surveys at the Teledyne Optech booth with technical experts from our bathymetry team, who will discuss how CZMIL’s depth penetration varies with water quality.

The Optech Titan is also an industry focus due to its innovative multispectral lidar technology, which enables shallow-water bathymetry, high-density topography/environmental mapping, and vegetative analyses in a triple-wavelength configuration.

Finally, coastal management authorities can learn about how the Optech ILRIS-MC terrestrial lidar recently helped survey Sydney Harbour in partnership with a multi-beam echosounder. This innovative watercraft-mounted solution is proving a rapid and inexpensive way to survey critical sections of shoreline in extreme detail both above and below the waterline.

Optech CMS V500 and ILRIS UAV coming to AIMS 2015 in Australia

Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce that both the Optech ILRIS and the brand-new CMS V500 will be at the 2015 National Conference of the Australian Institute of Mine Surveyors (AIMS) on August 12-14 in Perth, Australia.

The latest model of the Optech Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) will make its public debut at AIMS 2105, where visitors can learn about its new features with Teledyne Optech’s Business Manager for 3D Mapping Systems, Dave Adams. Chief among the new features is a cable-free setup, thanks to an internal battery and wireless communication antenna, which eases installation and enhances the system’s ability to withstand the rigors of underground mines. The sensor head has an integrated video and still camera to help operators identify features found by the lidar, yet despite these additions the system maintains the same slim profile for insertion into narrow apertures. Earlier models of the CMS carved a niche for lidar in mining operations, and the new V500 continues its leadership in this role as well as in underground surveying and less traditional applications.

Teledyne Optech has news for the open-pit industry as well, with the Optech ILRIS UAV solution now upgraded to our latest model of unmanned aerial vehicle. The geo-XR6 offers improved flight characteristics that provide a stable flight with minimal vibration for high-quality photogrammetry, plus an extended battery life and live video downlink to the UAV’s controller. Dario Conforti, Worldwide Channel Partner Manager for TLS, will make a presentation on the ILRIS UAV solution during Technical Session 6 on Friday the 14th at 2:00-2:40 in the Golden Ballroom, where he will explain how the ILRIS partners with the geo-XR6 to quickly collect colorized 3D data, and how the ground-based view of the lidar complements the bird’s-eye view of the UAV to capture targets from every angle.

Teledyne Optech can be found at booth 15, shared with our partner Western Australia Precision Surveys, while the CMS V500 is being hosted by C.R. Kennedy & Co.
