Principles of Cartographic Design



“We all know that there are good maps and bad maps, the problem is defining which is which. The reason for this is that whenever we discuss the principles of map design, we have to admit that we don’t know what they are.

The following principles were presented to the recent British Cartographic Society Design Group meeting at Glasgow University. They did not go unchallenged.

Principles were differentiated from rules such as those for placement of type. Whilst contributing to the design process, rules are not principles.”


Three Statements of Cartographic Design


– The purpose of design is to focus the attention of the user
– The Principles of Cartographic Design are Timeless, the Results are not
– The Rules of Cartographic Design can be taught and learnt, principles and concepts have to be acquired



Five Principals of Map Design

1. Concept before Compilation

Without a grasp of concept, the whole of the design process is negated. The parts embarrass the whole. Once concept is understood, no design or content feature will be included which does not fit it. Design the whole before the part. Design comes in two stages, concept and parameters, and detail in execution. Design once, devise, design again. User first, user last. What does the user want from this map? What can the user get from this map? Is that what they want? If a map were a building, it shouldn’t fall over.

2. Hierarchy with Harmony

Important things must look important, and the most important thing should look the most important. “They also serve who only stand and wait.” Lesser things have their place and should serve to complement the important. From the whole to the part, and all the parts, contributing to the whole. Associated items must have associated treatment. Harmony is to do with the whole map being happy with itself. Successful harmony leads to repose. Perfect harmony of elements leads to a neutral bloom. Harmony is subliminal.

3. Simplicity from Sacrifice

Great design tends towards simplicity (Bertin). Its not what you put in that makes a great map but what you take out. The map design stage is complete when you can take nothing else out. Running the film of an explosion backwards, all possibilities rush to one point. They become the right point. This is the designer’s skill. Content may determine scale or scale may determine content, and each determines the level of generalization (sacrifice).

4. Maximum Information at Minimum Cost (after Ziff)

How much information can be gained from this map, at a glance. Functionality not utility. Design makes utility functional. All designs are a compromise, just as a new born baby is a compromise between its father and mother. The spark which makes a map special often only comes when the map is complete.

5. Engage the Emotion to Engage the Understanding

Design with emotion to engage the emotion. Only by feeling what the user feels can we see what the user sees. Good designers use Cartographic fictions, Cartographic impressions, Cartographic illusions to make a map. All of these have emotive contents. The image is the message. Good design is a result of the tension between the environment (the facts) and the designer. Only when the reader engages the emotion, the desire, will they be receptive to the map’s message. Design uses aesthetics but the principles of aesthetics are not those of design. We are not just prettying maps up. The philosophy is simple, beauty (aesthetics) focuses the attention. Focusing the attention is the purpose of map design!

TerraSAR-X satellite feeding of Copernicus Data Warehouse extended until 2020

Airbus Defence and Space, owner of the commercial distribution rights for TerraSAR-X data, and ESA have signed a contract securing the continued supply of TerraSAR-X data for the Copernicus Data Warehouse. The agreement is valid until the end of 2020, thus continuing the successful cooperation between Airbus Defence and Space and ESA for the provision of TerraSAR-X data to public institutions across Europe in place since 2008.

TerraSAR-X has been a key data source particularly for activities addressing emergency and security related issues, reliable monitoring needs, and land cover change, both in Europe and beyond. Its unique reliability and high accuracy make it an ideal data source within ESA's multi-mission approach.

The Copernicus programme is set to make a step change by providing reliable, timely and accurate services to manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and help respond to crises. The success of this initiative relies on the provision of robust data, predominately from a fleet of Earth observation satellites called Sentinel and supplemented by data from Member States’ satellites (e.g. TerraSAR-X, Pléiades and SPOT). The Copernicus Data Warehouse provides comprehensive and coordinated access for all users to all Copernicus space data both from the Sentinel missions as well as the contributing missions through a single harmonised interface.

The agreement includes the provision of archived and newly acquired TerraSAR-X data for the Copernicus core datasets in the area of maritime monitoring, as well as additional datasets for further maritime applications particularly sea ice monitoring. The contract also includes the maintenance for the Copernicus-specific interfaces for the ordering, delivery and reporting process that have been established during the previous phases.

Earth Imaging Gets a Close-Up

Geography of Jobs in the United States

Where Are the Jobs? is an interactive map of the number of jobs in the US using 2010 data from the Census Bureau’s Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics study (LEHD). The map divides job types into various categories including manufacturing and trade, professional services, healthcare, education and government, and retail, hospitality and other services. Each dot in the graph represents a job recorded through state unemployment insurance and federal jobs.

Each job type is color coded to show where certain jobs are clustered in various parts of the United States. The geographical job map covers approximately 96% of jobs in the United States. The graphic was created by a Harvard PhD student named Robert Manduca and was inspired by a racial dot map that showed ethnic diversity across the United States. Since jobs can be more concentrated than populations of people the map is useful for determining where the highest concentration of jobs is in cities across the country.

The map can be used to chart demographic information from census data to show where higher-income individuals live in relation to where their jobs are. This can be laid over a map of the more extensive parts of a city as well. For example, in New York City the map shows a high concentration of individuals who have high incomes living in expensive parts of town, like Manhattan. Lower paid jobs exist in areas like Brooklyn which is home to a lot of industry; Queens, meanwhile, is a diverse location as far as residents and jobs go.

Areas in Northern California have a high concentration of electronic and technology related jobs while manufacturing and industrial labor employment opportunities are decreasing more and more each year. Employment is highly concentrated is downtown city centers but, as the job map reveals, most jobs still exist outside of major cities. Certain suburban areas also reveal high concentrations of employment which is normal. Industrial centers, shopping malls and business parks can employ many people in a variety of sectors.

The map has some gaps as places like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands aren’t covered. Additionally, Massachusetts data is also missing because that state hasn’t integrated its data into LEHD’s system. The data isn’t entirely inclusive; for instance, the four categories of job types exclude jobs that don’t fit those labels. Additionally, some federal jobs aren’t included because of security reasons and thus data in governmental centers like Washington, D.C. appear quite empty on the map. Overall, the map includes about 96% of civilian wage and salary jobs, per the estimate provided by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The importance of job map can be used to chart the rise and fall of employment in the United States. Understanding where jobs are, where they’ve been and where they are moving to is as important as brushing up a resume or writing a new cover letter. How we can quantify the jobs that exist in the United States today can potentially help us understand recessions, job movement, and where opportunities are for a variety of job sectors.
