New Women in GIS Networking Group

BY CAITLIN DEMPSEY MORAIS

A core group of women GIS professionals has recently organized a Women in GIS networking group. The group members refer to themselves by a pronunciation of the acronym WIGIS, “wahjus”. The nascent professional group has recently launched its website: www.womeningis.org.

The mission of WIGIS is to: work towards overcoming job discrimination, lower pay, professional isolation, and other common barriers women might face, and foster relationships and resource sharing among members and institutions. Female geospatial professionals that would like to join this group are invited to add themselves on the Women in GIS story map and join the LinkedIn Women in GIS group. To receive emails about the group’s activities, women are invited to sign up to the group’s listserv by filling out this form.

The site is in its early stages and resources and features will be added over time. The first feature is the WIGIS Who We Are interview series. The first interview is with Becky Morton, the co-founder and the CEO of GeoWing Mapping Inc.
